Veterans' preference is one of the most powerful advantages available to former service members in the federal hiring process. It can literally put your application at the top of the pile — but only if you know how to claim it correctly.
What Is Veterans' Preference?
Veterans' preference gives eligible veterans an advantage in federal hiring by adding points to their examination scores or placing them ahead of non-veterans on hiring lists. It applies to most competitive service positions.
Types of Veterans' Preference
- 5-Point Preference (TP): For veterans who served during a war, campaign, or expedition and received an honorable or general discharge
- 10-Point Compensable Disability (CP): For veterans with a service-connected disability rated 10-29%
- 10-Point 30% or More Disability (CPS): For veterans with a 30%+ service-connected disability rating
- 10-Point Other (XP): For Purple Heart recipients, disabled veterans, and certain family members
How to Claim Veterans' Preference
- On your USAJOBS profile, select "Yes" for veterans' preference eligibility
- Upload your DD-214 (Member Copy 4) — this is the version with character of service
- If claiming disability preference, upload your VA disability rating letter (SF-15)
- Ensure your federal resume clearly states your military service dates and discharge status
Common Mistakes
- Uploading the wrong DD-214 copy (you need Member Copy 4)
- Not claiming preference at all — many veterans don't know they're eligible
- Assuming preference guarantees a job — you still need a strong resume and qualifications
